Funk13, Ideas, Projects, Thoughts

After spending nearly all of my March blog earnings on domain names, I’ve decided instead of just leaving them parked at SEDO (domain parking) I’ll take the one I like best and try to do something with it. To be honest it was a post I read over at bloggernoob.com that got the ball rolling. He basically talks about how It’s a good idea to start building your site now. And that you don’t even have to give it 100% just yet, just get it out there and work on it slowly.

Anyway, as I’ve mentioned in an earlier post, I registered the domain cmsnerd.com. This was a domain registered with the intention of developing it in to some kind of site. Before I started blogging I was always playing around with content management systems. Joomla, PHPcow, PHP-Nuke, those kinds of things. If I hadn’t taken a such a liking to blogging I’d probably still be pissing around with them now. :) So, my latest plan. Well, you might have noticed that there seems to be a big craze with WordPress css theme galleries. csselite.com is a good example. Basically these bloggers screen shot a website they think looks good and they simply upload it to their blog and showcase it. Well I’ve decided to do the same but I’ll be targeting certain cms driven sites. I’ll name the cms the site is using, upload a screen shot and post some info on the customizations. Sounds simple enough, but I’m guessing it won’t be.

I’ve been looking around for sites similar to what I want to do and I’ve found virtually nothing. Now this could be for the following reasons:

  • There isn’t really a market for it
  • I don’t know how to search properly
  • People have tried and failed
  • CMS is dying (I doubt that, wordpress is starting to look more like a cms)
  • It’s to similar to css galleries

To be honest I’m quite glad there isn’t much competition, there’s no pressure on me. I just have to post a few screen shots a day and Google will come along and index me. This is the main reason I’ve decided to create this type of blog/site. I wont be eating up all of my time. I’m not to fussed about running around promoting it yet. I just want to get something out there, get the ball rolling. I’m absolutely terrible at affiliate marketing so maybe developing sites is where I’ll come good. I won’t know if I don’t try. :) One bad thing is, I forgot how much time it takes to set up a new blog, well for me anyway. I’ve had to find a cheap/free host to get it up and running, sort of my Name Servers, sort out my sitemaps, customize the theme I’m using. There’s still quite a lot that needs to be done.

Here’s the link to my site http://cmsnerd.com I think it’s down at the moment though. :( Damn cheap ass free hosting! :D Like I said, there’s still a lot of work that needs doing, but I’m just going to take my time with it and build it up slowly. If you want to be really nice :) you can submit some sites for review and you can vote on the sites I’ve listed.

I’d definitely go for it if I was you, like you said, slow and steady. I’ve got a few sites knocking around I update every now and then. One of them even has a pr2 :) I don’t know how that happened.

  2. Funked Says:

Lol, when did you get your pr2 site? I might buy it off you :) I’m confident I can post 3 sites a day so I’ll see how it goes. Lol, I might get banned for seeming like a spam blog.

Anyway, See you the weekend mate.

Hey, nice blog. Would you mind telling me where I can download this theme? I’m starting a new wordpress blog and I think I would like to use it too.

    :) Thx in advance.

  4. Funked Says:

Clairh123 - Thankyou! The theme is available here. revolutiontheme.com. It isn’t a free theme by the way, but the revolution themes are well worth the money.

I’ve also done a lot of customization to my blog too. I’ve added a full width header, I’ve turned the layout in to a more blog looking style. I’ve also added new sections and deleted one of the header menus.

    I’m hoping it’s unique :)

It’s a great idea and if you have a site where users add content, you have a site that grows without your input. I have many sites out there that I built and left alone and still have rank from the search engines just waiting for me to monetize them more effectively. It’s a great domain name too. Thanks for the banner there. :)

Hey, great idea - I sent you a message using the contact form at cmsnerd.com. :)

So far It seems like a good little project. There’s no real writing to be done so it’s not going to be to big of a time killer. If it goes well I might ad a blog to it and hire some bloggers to update that side of it.

How did you know I placed your banner on there? The sites been off line for god knows how long now. Damn Free hosts!!! :|

Hey Ben, so you can get on to the site aswell. Hmmm, I keep ending up on it’s old parking page.

thanks a bunch for the mention. I think ur plans for cmsnerd are great. it’s a great idea too. I think a lot of noobs don’t know the options that are avi for different content management systems. ben at benbarden dot com has a cool one he’s using as well. it doesn’t have to be wordpress. Bloggers can work on different types of sites with different cms. put up some cool hacks and i’ll be visiting your site often :) i want to learn joomla

  10. Ben Barden Says:

Ah, hold on, now I see the parking page. Hmm indeed…

and thanks, noob, for mentioning me :) I beat you to it though. lol.

noob - Yeah I’ve already checked out bens cms. I’m going to ad it to my site. Joomla, yeah it’s a nice looking CMS you can do almost anything with it. A hack page, now there’s a good idea. :)

ben- Yeah I’m having a nightmare getting this site opened. Just as I was about to go live, hostgator flagged my site. There was a mismatch with my whois record and my hostgator account details.

I have to wait until my whois updates and then I have to sign up to host gator again. The Internet is so annoying at times. :|
